Littering at Red Sands increases ahead of Fourth of July celebrations
Spent fireworks, beer bottles and trash litter Red Sands, just of east of Montana Vista, on the eve of the Fourth of July.
“Unfortunately, in the Red Sands area, we experience a lot of littering,” Chief Instructor Rider Safety Officer Jamil Moutran said.
Visitors to the dunes leave behind pounds of trash, which Moutran says is frustrating. His office offers resources to dispose of the garbage.
“We make it very easy because we have a dumpster at the main entrance and we offer free trash bags at the Rider Safety Office,” Moutran said.
The dunes expect to see hundreds of people during the holiday, which means an increase of trash will follow, Moutran said.
“As a community, we need to ensure we protect our ridding communities,” Moutran said. “When you leave a bottle here chances are no one is going to pick it up and throw it away.”
The Rider Safety Office will be working closely with the Sheriff’s Office to police the area. Any unlawful littering and dumping could result in fines.
