Community holds vigil for migrants who died after trying to cross Rio grande
Thursday evening members from Border Network for Human Rights, The Detained Migrant Solidarity Community and faith leaders held a vigil to honor the migrant lives lost on the Rio Grande earlier this week.
Organizers said they want to call to an end what they say are border controls that have killed thousands of migrants across the border in recent years.
The immigrant advocates marched to the Santa Fe Bridge where they held a prayer as a response to what they call a moral crises.
“This is the kind of tragedy that shouldn’t be happening. It’s a tragedy that could be avoided if country’s like the United States were more open and welcoming to receiving immigrants,” said immigrant advocate Lourdes Ortiz.
The group held a sign up that read up to 6,000 immigrants have died crossing our border since 2000 and they want to bring awareness to the situation.
