Behind the scenes of the Mission Chevrolet Humane Society telethon

If you’ve skimmed the T.V. channels Saturday you probably saw Mission Chevrolet’s Humane Society of El Paso Telethon.

What you don’t see is the amount of work that goes behind the cause.

In the studio, camera operators are on standby.

Floor managers are getting those in front of the camera ready.

In the control room the director and technical director don’t leave their seats for seven hours while audio operators are constantly monitoring sound levels.

Editors are combing through hours of video to not only provide for the telethon but for the newscast as well.

There’s also staff covering social media updates and of course there’s the stars of the show — all the cute pups waiting to be adopted.

Both in the studio and the newsroom, volunteers are taking calls and gathering information.

Volunteers like Esther Herrera who’s been volunteering for 16 years.

“I love animals. I’d love to hopefully have them find a good home a loving home a caring home,” Herrera said.

There were also a few students from Parkland High school volunteering their time.

This is Alexis Ruiz second year volunteering.

“This is a way I can give back and help because I can’t donate money but I can donate my time,” Ruiz said.

The Humane Society of El Paso is a non-profit that depends on donations to keep operating.

“As any pet owner knows, it’s incredibly expensive to care for one pet, let alone the 200 we have at the humane society. At any given time we buy their food, we buy their bedding, paying the staff members that care for them and love them and wash their linens and their toys and blankies and every penny makes a difference and we do rely on it and so do they,” said Humane Society of El Paso Spokeswoman Ryan Coulehan.
