Eclipse 2017: An inside look at new NASA software

On August 21st, 2017, the Earth, moon, and sun will perfectly align for a once in a lifetime opportunity that millions of Americans will have the chance to experience.

NASA’s Eyes software allows the public to explore the solar system and beyond and now, a glance ahead at what to expect during the eclipse.

“This program was made to show the public what we do. Too often you think of these things out of reach, out of your mind,” explained Jason Craig, Technical Producer of Software, Eyes on the Solar System.

Those in the path of totality, a 60-70 mile wide area stretch from Oregon to South Carolina, will have the best seats to witness day turn to night for a brief moment.

On average, there is one total solar eclipse visible somewhere every 18 months but from any one location on earth, total eclipses take place on average only once in several hundred years.

Here’s how you can access the Eyes’ program:
– Go to eyes.nasa.gov
– Click the big blue button in the center of the screen
– Follow instructions for the simple install

and now you have multiple programs at the ready that will constantly update itself with new features.
