Storms threaten Socorro area residents
With storms on the horizon residents in the Socorro area are preparing for the possibility of flash floods.
In past weeks residents living on the Coker Road have seen flooding and mudslides up to 6 feet high. Many them still cleaning up the mess.
ABC-7 spoke with residents living on Coker Road who say they are concerned with the possibility
of rains.
ABC-7 spoke with Coker Road resident Pedro Murillo who’s dealing with an illness and said despite his lack of mobility he and his wife are ready to leave at a moments notice.
ABC-7 also spoke with Socorro’s interim mayor Rene Rodriguez who said the city is under an emergency declaration which puts first responders on stand by.
They will be monitoring the situation throughout the night.
If it begins to rain, officers will be going to known flood areas and accessing the situation.
If needed residents will be evacuated and put into the shelter at Socorro High School.
Rodriguez said the Socorro High School baseball team was filling sandbags in preparation for the weekend storms.
The city will have sand bag stations at the Rio Vista community center and at the intersection of Moon Road and Old Hueco road.
