Fire department urges precaution during colder temps, holiday season

As the colder temperatures approach the Borderland in the coming days, many will finally turn to their heaters to keep their homes warm.

The El Paso Fire Department recommends that residents get their heaters inspected by a professional company that uses a carbon monoxide detector and is able to fix any necessary repairs.

“The winter time is generally a busier time for us with regards to house fires because we have the introduction of heat sources into the home,” said Lt. James Schaerfl of the El Paso Fire Department.

Schaerfl said homes should have working carbon monoxide detectors.

“If you start feeling like you have a headache, you feel naseous, you have unexplained symptoms that maybe more than one person in the home is feeling, you need to get outside, get fresh air and call 911 immediately,” Schaerfl said.

Space heaters can also pose a threat to homes if they are left unattended or too close to bedding and curtains.

HOLIDAY DECORATING SAFETY

For some, the holiday season means filling your home with holiday cheer, like trees, lights and candles, but they can also become potential hazards.

If you are using any candles, the El Paso Fire Department recommended opting for flameless, battery-operated candles, using flame retardant or resistant decorations.

Other precautions include:

— Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both. Make sure you are using the appropriate lighting.
— Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect.
— Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged.
— Keep decorations away from windows and doors.

If you choose to have a live Christmas tree in your home, it is best to water it daily so it doesn’t dry out.

“You combine that with an overloaded electrical outlet, lit candles or a fire place in the room, and you’re really setting yourself up for a potential disaster,” Schaerfl said.
