Report: Mike Canales expected to be named UTEP’s offensive coordinator

According to multiple reports, UTEP is expected to name Mike Canales as the team’s new offensive coordinator.

The news was first reported Friday by the Arizona Daily Star.

Canales spent the past season as the quarterbacks coach with the University of Tennessee.

He has a variety of coaching experience at a number of different schools including Utah State, North Texas, South Florida, Arizona, North Carolina State, Pacific, Snow College, and BYU.

He was also a wide receivers coach for the New York Jets during the 2003 NFL season.

Canales spent part of his time at Arizona as co-offensive coordinator with UTEP’s new head coach, Dana Dimel.

Dimel had previously promised that he would work quickly to bring in staff members. News of Canales joining the staff broke just over 24 hours after Dimel was introduced by UTEP at a news conference on Thursday.

Canales will get a chance to play against Tennessee with UTEP this upcoming season as the Miners will meet the Volunteers in Knoxville in week three of the 2018 season.
