Las Cruces hit-and-run victim dies early Thursday morning, mother confirms

The victim of last week’s Las Cruces hit-and-run died early Thursday morning, her mother confirmed to ABC-7.

Sonia Castillo died at 4:42 a.m. on Thursday after her family pulled her off life support, said Estella Garcia, Castillo’s mother.

Castillo’s health had been rapidly declining in the days since police say she was intentionally struck by a black pick-up truck.

Police arrested Angel Saenz Jr. in connection with the crime, who family members say was Castillo’s ex-boyfriend.

Saenz Jr. was originally charged with aggravated battery against a household member, leaving the scene and resisting or obstructing, according to the Doña Ana County inmate booking details.

Castillo’s death comes just hours before Saenz Jr. is set to appear in District Court, where the Third Judicial District Attorney’s office will ask for pre-trial detention.

ABC-7 will be in the courtroom. Check back for updates.
