UTEP tops Howard 69-56, Miners win 4th game in a row

The UTEP Miners continued their winning ways Thursday night in the opening round of the WestStar Bank Don Haskins Sun Bowl Invitational.

The Miners took down the Howard University Bison by a final of 69-56.

With the win, UTEP won it’s 4th game in a row and improved to 5-6 on the season.

The Miners came out firing on all cylinders in the first half going up 24-7 in the first 13 minutes of the game.

But the Bison would battle back to cut the Miners lead to just 7 points at halftime.

In the second half, the Miners would regain control of the game and never give up the lead.

UTEP outscored Howard 32-26 in the second half.

UTEP’s Keith Frazier led the way in scoring for the Miners with 23 points.

UTEP freshman forward Tirus Smith also had a big game with a career high 17 points.

The Miners will now face North Dakota State in the championship game Friday at 7 p.m.

The North Dakota St. Bison put up 100 points in their win against North Carolina Wilmington Thursday evening at the Haskins Center.

UTEP hasn’t won the Sun Bowl Invitational since 2014, but they’re hoping this year will be the year they hold up the Sun Bowl tournament trophy on their own home court.
