NMSU knocks off No. 6 Miami 63-54

The New Mexico State Aggies once again proved it doesn’t matter the school or the conference, they can hang with anyone.

The Aggies knocked off the 6th ranked Miami Hurricanes in the semi-finals of the Diamond Head Classic by a final of 63-54.

The Hurricanes came into the game undefeated with a perfect 10-0 record, but the Aggies were not the least bit intimidated.

NMSU struggled in the early minutes of the game, but they battled back to go into the half up 29-25.

The Aggies controlled much of the second half staying in front of the Miami Hurricanes the majority of the way.

With under 10 minutes to go NMSU’s Shunn Buchanan gave the Aggies their biggest lead of the game when he hit a 3-pointer from the wing to put NMSU up by 7 points.

However, the Hurricanes would close the gap, with less than a minute left in the game Miami was down by just one point, but NMSU’s Zach Lofton would add some insurance after hitting a 3-point shot to put the Aggies up by 4.

Lofton would lead the way in scoring for the Aggies with 15 points.

On the Hurricane’s next possession, NMSU’s AJ Harris would come up with a steal and get a layup to put the Aggies up 6.

That would seal the deal and the Aggies would give the Hurricanes their first loss of the season.

The Aggies improve their record to 11-2.

The last time NMSU knocked off a top ten team was back in 1990.

That was when NMSU beat the 7th ranked UNLV Rebels 83-82.

NMSU advances to the championship game of the Diamond Head Classic.

They’ll face the USC Trojans on Christmas Day.
