Elementary school to close doors permanently

An elementary school in Northeast El Paso will be closing its doors for good at the end of the school year.

According to the El Paso Times, the El Paso Independent School District Board of Trustees voted Tuesday to shut down Burnet Elementary at 3700 Thomason Avenue.

ABC-7 had reported in 2015 that Burnet was one of several schools that was recommended for closure by the Jacobs Engineering Group, a firm hired by the board to evaluate the schools and facilities.

The district will save $1.3 million by closing the school, according to the newspaper.

The EPISD board has been looking for ways to cut expenses as it struggles with declining enrollment.

The Times reported that the attendance zones will be changed and students will go to Powell, Logan, Travis or Bliss elementaries, and be bused if necessary.
