New Mexico Democrats wrestle with questions of diversity

New Mexico Senate Democrats made history this week by electing a second woman to the chamber’s majority leadership team, but the move is drawing criticism from some because that team is now all white.

Some Hispanic lawmakers say one of the spots should have gone to a Latina since the state has the highest percentage of Hispanic residents in the nation.

Hispanics make up the majority of the Democratic caucus that elects the leaders, but Sens. John Sapien and Joseph Cervantes say they are concerned about the message it sent about the importance of Hispanics in the party.

Senate President Pro Tempore Mary Kay Papen says a number of Hispanic senators chair key committees.

New Mexico has historically elected and elevated Hispanic political leaders since its territorial days.
