Amazon narrows list of cities to host HQ2; El Paso not included

Amazon has narrowed the list of cities that are candidates for its second headquarters.

The list, released Thursday morning on its website, includes 20 major cities.

El Paso is not one of them, but other cities in Texas made the cut. Cities in New Mexico are also not included in the list.

Here are the top contenders:

Atlanta, GA

Austin, TX

Boston, MA

Chicago, IL

Columbus, OH

Dallas, TX

Denver, CO

Indianapolis, IN

Los Angeles, CA

Miami, FL

Montgomery County, MD

Nashville, TN

Newark, NJ

New York City, NY

Northern Virginia, VA

Philadelphia, PA

Pittsburgh, PA

Raleigh, NC

Toronto, ON

Washington, D.C.

Amazon reviewed 238 proposals.

The City of El Paso and the Borderplex Alliance submitted their proposal to Amazon in October of last year.

UTEP even offered Amazon the opportunity to lease more than 200 acres at the old Asarco site in an effort to help bring the online retail giant to El Paso.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reported that New Mexico’s bid for Amazon’s second headquarters included a southern option located between Santa Teresa, New Mexico, and San Jeronimo, Mexico.

Amazon’s second home is expected to generate $5 billion in investments and create 50,000 jobs.

Amazon said on its website that it will work with candidate locations in the coming months to “dive deeper into their proposals, request additional information as necessary, and evaluate the feasibility of a future partnership that can accommodate our hiring plans as well as benefit our employees and the local community.”

The company expects to make a decision in 2018, according to its statement.
