TxDOT explains safety measures at construction sites
When construction crews started demolishing existing infrastructure to work on the braided ramps project ABC-7 saw chunks of concrete fly onto Gateway West Boulevard.
We reached out to the Texas Department of Transportation to see what safety measures were in place to protect drivers and workers. “People are human mistakes can be made, but we work really hard to make sure safety standards are adhered to,” explained TxDOT spokeswoman Jennifer Wright. She said crews follow “SW3P,” the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan, to maintain safety. “That means that they have to contain the debris from their demolition and their construction work within the limits of the job behind the barrier,” said Wright. Contractors are often hired to complete TxDOT projects, Wright said, adding that contractors employ subcontractors for work such as demolition. She said a chain of command has been established to make sure crews and motorists go unharmed while projects are completed.
“It’s up to the construction company to be inspecting their (subcontractors),” Wright said. “It’s up to TxDOT, basically, to oversee those contractors and by extension their subs.” Wright said if you see anything that may be unsafe to report it to the TxDOT El Paso office.
