Four Republicans challenging Sen. Cruz in Tuesday’s primary

Incumbent Texas Senator Ted Cruz has four challengers in Tuesday’s Republican Primary: Mary Miller, Stefano de Stefano, Geraldine Sam and Bruce Jacobson Jr.

Here are some key positions from all five candidates:

Mary Miller

Mary Miller has worked as a Certified Public Accountant and a university teacher. She belives Obamacare should not be revoked and is an advocate of providing medical care at a reasonable cost.

“Competition and the free market will drive costs down and provide greater consumer choice to those above a certain financial standard,” Miller says on her website, “Obamacare is our best solution. It’s not perfect, by any means, but we can’t leave all of our fellow Americans without insurance. Period.”

Miller believes there are countries that shouldn’t be receiving aide from the United States and plans to introduce legislation for a cyber-warfare branch for the U.S. military.

As far as economy goes, Miller wants to “bring back a robust economy by putting more money in the pockets of the middle and working class.”

Miller, who describes herself as a moderate Republican, believes “in small government and being fiscally responsible. We have a $22 trillion-dollar deficit and our government keeps raising our “credit limit” instead of cutting back on spending. Our country cannot continue to support that level of debt.”

Her stand on immigration differs from other Republicans, saying the best way to keep borders safe is to hire more U.S. Customs and Border Agents. She also believes a new border wall isn’t a viable option.

Miller is also in favor of Planned Parenthood. “In the case of rape and incest, I will not further victimize these women. It must be their choice,” Miller said, “Women should have access to birth control, Plan B, and free clinics, such as Planned Parenthood. If insurance covers Viagra under Medicare and Medicaid, then women need to receive the same benefits for birth control.”

Stefano de Stefano

Stefano de Stefano is an energy sector attorney working out of Houston, and at 37, is the youngest candidate on the Republican ballot. He claims incumbent Ted Cruz has a few unresolved issues and is launching an extremist political brand into the White House.

One of de Stefano’s main proposals is making infrastructure investments a priority in the U.S. Senate, claiming the state of Texas needs roadway improvements.

His plan to reduce national debt includes passing a balanced federal budget. Stefano believes cannabis for recreational and medical use should be legal at the federal level.

Stefano also stands for stricter gun laws and believes Congress should modernize the nation’s gun laws “to reflect today’s reality: semi-automatic weapons like AR-15s were not threatening kids when the 2nd Amendment was ratified in 1791.”

Senator Ted Cruz

Ted Cruz, the incumbent junior senator from Teas, has served as Senator since 2013 and was on the Republican ballot during the 2016 Presidential election primaries.

He stands for pro-growth policies within the economy. He claims a pro-growth agenda will empower the private sector to create more jobs and remove federal impediments to exploration, development and trade.

His tenure as Senator has seen him be a leading voice for repealing Obamacare. He claims Obamacare is causing millions to lose their jobs.

Cruz border security needs to be strengthen and is proposing to help expand green card opportunities and increase high-skilled “H1B” visas. Cruz opposes Common Core and believes education decisions should be made on the state and local level. He is also proposing to fight to protect the internet as a platform for innovation.

Geraldine Sam

Geraldine Sam served as the mayor of La Marque, Texas from 2009 to 2011. She also served as a delegate at the 2016 Republican National Convention.

Sam disagrees with some decisions made by President Trump, including his use of social media. She believes the Republican Party is heading in the wrong direction and disagrees with Congress’ most recent tax reform proposal.

Bruce Jacobson Jr.

Jacobson currently serves as Vice President of Media for LIFE Outreach International.

His political experience includes serving as a political appointee for the Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations.

Jacobson supports a tax reform that would allow people to keep a greater share of the income the have earned. He believes Obamacare should be put to an end, claiming it’s not affordable and driving doctors out of business.

As far gun laws, Jacobson strongly defends Second Amendment rights and plans to protect them.
