Congressional District 23: Hurd easily defeats challenger in Republican primary
Incumbent Congressman Will Hurd easily defeated his challenger on the Republican ballot for Texas’ District 23 U.S. Representative primary.
A portion of El Paso County is part of District 23. Results late Tuesday show Hurd received nearly 80 percent of the vote while Alma Arredondo-Lynch received about 20 percent of the vote.

Arredondo-Lynch is a dentist and rancher out of Uvalde. She proposed expanding vocational and technical education to traditional universities and government schools. She also supported President Trump’s border initiatives and believes in increasing Border Patrol personnel.
Hurd has served as the Texas District 23 U.S. Representative since 2016. In 2017, he was appointed by Speaker Paul Ryan to serve of the House Permanent Select Intelligence Committee. When it comes to tax reform, Hurd is an advocate of a reduced corporate tax rate, which he believes will incentivize business owners to reinvest in their companies.
Hurd believes the federal government spends too much public funding on unreliable and unsecured IT systems and is proposing modernizing the government’s IT systems. Hurd is proposing to better the status of veterans through federal funding.
The Democratic Primary appears to be headed for a runoff. Gina Ortiz Jones received 41 percent of the vote. Her closest rival, Rick Treviño received about 18 percent of the vote.

Jones served in the U.S. Air Force as an intelligence officer and as the Senior Advisor for Trade Enforcement, a position President Obama created by executive order in 2012. She also served as a Director for Investment at the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative.
Jones is in favor of investing in small business and innovation. Her stand on immigration includes protecting DACA recipients and providing a path to citizenship. She is proposing affordable access to reproductive health services for women, including those in rural communities. Jones intends to end discrimination in employment, housing, education, health care, family planning and public accommodations.
Treviño is a former teacher and was a delegate for Bernie Sanders during the 2016 National Democrat Convention. He believes health care is a right for all people and that it should be affordable. He intends to fight for Single-Payer Medicare.
Treviño is an advocate for raising the minimum wage to $15 in an effort to help low income workers. He claims free public colleges and universities are necessary to educate the nation’s workforce and is proposing to provide tuition free colleges and universities.
