State Rep. Gonzalez reelected in Texas District 75
Voters in El Paso reelected the incumbent state representative in Texas House District 75.
Mary Gonzalez easily defeated her challenger, political newcomer MarySue Femath. There is no Republican candidate in the race.

District 75 includes east El Paso County, a portion of Far East El Paso and the towns of Socorro, Clint, Fabens, and Tornillo.
Gonzalez was first elected to represent Texas District 75 in 2012 was reelected by voters in 2014 and 2016. The state representative says she is fighting for fully-funded classrooms, basic health care, and “fairness for all.”
In addition to serving in the powerful House Appropriations Committee, Gonzalez currently serves on the public education, agriculture and livestock committees in the Texas House of Representatives. She has been named “Freshman of the Year” by the Mexican American Legislative Caucus and “Champion of Equality” by Equality Texas.
During the campaign, Gonzalez has touted her experience in working with Republicans to pass legislation. In political ads, Femath claims Gonzalez has failed to pass legislation that benefits her constituents in District 75.
Femath, a former accountant and coordinator for an education and library program, says she is committed to providing opportunities for El Paso children to pursue higher education. Femath is proposing “progressive changes” to education that will provide students with a “competitive advantage when they come from disadvantaged backgrounds.” If elected, Femath would become the first Native American elected to Texas House of Representatives.
Gonzalez received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree from St. Edward’s University. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Cultural Studies in Education at the University of Texas in Austin. Femath has bachelor’s degree with a double major in accounting and finance from the University of Texas at El Paso and a master’s degree in education from the University of North Texas. The El Paso Times reports Femath is a member of the Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo, where she is assistant director of tribal empowerment.
