Documents: Chaparral man accused of raping child claims medication makes him forget things

A Chaparral man accused of sexually assaulting a 5-year-old child allegedly told investigators he did not believe he did anything wrong because the child never asked him to stop.

Pablo Meza Aragon, 73, of the 500 block of Mesilla View in Chaparral, New Mexico, was booked Saturday into the Doña Ana County Detention Center on charges of “criminal sexual penetration of a child under 13” and “enticement of a child.”

The alleged sexual assault happened Friday, March 9, 2018. The following day, investigators were called to The Child Advocacy Center to interview the accusers.

The children told investigators they were playing outside in a yard when Meza called out to the 5-year-old child. Meza allegedly lured the five-year-old to a nearby shed by promising he would show the child a bunny.

Once inside the shed, Meza allegedly kissed the child, removed the child’s underwear and sexually assaulted the child, a criminal complaint states.

ABC-7 does not identify the victims of sexual assault. ABC-7 is not revealing the child’s gender, the child’s relation to Meza or the identifies of the child’s parents in an effort to protect the child’s identity.

Court documents state the father told investigators his wife asked him to take care of the children while she was away. The father further stated, that as he was tending to a customer, he noticed Meza taking his child into the shed. When the customer left, the father approached his children and was told Meza had sexually assaulted the five-year-old.

Court documents state that when police interviewed Meza, he allegedly said he kissed the five-year-old child “in order to show some affection” and that he “thought what he was doing was okay because (the child) didn’t tell him to stop.”

Moments later, Meza allegedly told police he knew what he did was wrong, but “the medication he takes for his heart and diabetes makes him forget things.”

Online jail records state Meza is being held without bond.
