Cielo Vista Mall fireworks prankster to serve time in jail

A 17-year-old boy who pleaded guilty to a fireworks prank at Cielo Vista Mall in 2017 will now be spending time in jail.

El Paso Police said the prank caused more than $13,000 in damage to mall property. At the time, police arrested Gabriel Sebastian Gonzalez and another 15-year-old boy.

In February 2018, Gonzalez pleaded guilty to charges of felony criminal mischief causing more than $25,000 in damage. A judge sentenced Gonzalez to two years deferred adjudication, 300 hours of community service and ordered him to pay a $500 fine.

Court records show Gonzalez had another hearing last week. He was sentenced on March 7, 2018 to 30 days at the El Paso County Jail Annex.

The El Paso Times reports Gonzalez was given jail time because he allegedly continued to promote the social media video of the fireworks prank. According to the Times, since the video was still up on You Tube, prosecutors decided it was a “continuation of the crime” and requested jail time for Gonzalez.
