New Mexico man allegedly used child as a shield during SWAT standoff
A Rio Rancho, New Mexico man is facing child abuse charges after he allegedly used his own child as a shield during a standoff with police.
A criminal complaint obtained by KRQE in Albuquerque states Fred Ortiz and Bryan Hughte were “heavily intoxicated and barely able to stand.”
Instead of turning themselves into the Rio Rancho police officers, Ortiz allegedly started filming on his cell phone.
Ortiz allegedly grabbed his young child from the backseat of his car and used the child as a shield between him and the officers.
Fortunately, police were able to take both men into custody and get the child to safety.
