No end in sight for allergy sufferers in the borderland

It’s not just pollen contributing to your allergies.

“We need a few ingredients,” said Dr. David DuBois, the state climatologist for New Mexico. “You need wind. This is the time for wind.”

DuBois told ABC-7 that beyond wind, unusually hot weather can contribute to allergy symptoms.

“We need nice warm temperatures,” DuBois said.

For those suffering from allergies, the next few weeks don’t look good.

“I don’t see much relief in allergies right now,” DuBois said. “Plus, we’ve got dust. That’s another part of the equation, is what impacts our health is dust. We’ve got combinations of pollen and dust that we have to deal with.”

Some Sunland Park residents suffer from mulberry tree allergies, unlike those who live in El Paso, where the trees were outlawed by city council in 1992.

“I love the mulberry trees… they make go through a little bit of discomfort,” said Daniel Carranco, Sunland Park’s city clerk.

After running out of his own tissues, Carranco said he’s had to steal from his coworkers.

“I’ve got a runny nose (and) a little bit of congestion going,” Carranco said.

He’s not the only one.

“I have to clear my throat a lot,” said Diane Avery, a resident of Canutillo. “I have a runny nose, sneezing, runny eyes (and) itchy eyes. All that kind of stuff.”

The next few days could be especially tough for those with runny noses at their desks. ABC-7 has issued a First Alert for increased winds and “patchy, blowing dust” over the next few days.

Not only that, StormTRACKER Nichole Gomez predicts the warming trend will continue Thursday afternoon. High temperatures should run 10 to 15 degrees above normal throughout the end of Friday.
