City Council to make final decision on diocese-owned Lower Valley land
The battle over land in Lower Valley, between area resident and the Catholic Diocese of El Paso, may soon have a resolution.
On Tuesday , City Council representatives unanimously voted to hold a public hearing and vote on the fate of nearly 10 acres of land near Craddock Avenue and James Street.
The decision comes after the City Plan Commission voted 6-to 1 denying the diocese rezone request that would allow developers to build 50 homes on the parcel once sold.
Nearby neighbors have protested the possible development, saying it would add to area congestion and tie up traffic.
A sign posted on a fence adjacent to the property read “BISHOP SEITZ: Help us preserve the health, safety and character of our established neighborhood. PEOPLE FIRST, NOT MONEY.”
According to documents, the diocese pays $10,000 a year cleaning and maintaining the lots on the land, an amount it’s been paying since 1996, totaling out to around $220,000.
In January, developers told ABC-7 the original plan was to build 59 homes. The number has since been decreased.
