Las Cruces mayor honors NMSU chancellor for service

The Las Cruces mayor honored the outgoing New Mexico State University chancellor with a special award on Monday.

“The city and the university have grown together in a number of different ways,” said Chancellor Garrey Carruthers, whose contract is up in July.

Mayor Ken Miyagishima awarded Carruthers with the Mayor’s Distinguished Service Award.

“I very much appreciate this plaque,” Carruthers said. “I’ll put it up in my new office. It looks a lot better than the old office and there sure is a lot less stress.”

NMSU regents selected Dr. Dan Arvizu as the university’s new chancellor and Dr. John Floros as the university’s next president.

Carruthers held both roles during his time in office. He was also governor of New Mexico as well as a student, faculty member and dean of NMSU.
