Quarter-size hail, flooding

Strong storms brought rain, hail and high winds to the Borderland on Monday.

The severe weather caused power outages, flooding and downed trees mostly in west El Paso.

The storm water knocked down a rock wall in Daniel Pena’s backyard.

“I can’t explain it. It was just like a roaring boom sound,” Pena said.

The water quickly flooded his yard. Pena and his wife have lived in their home on Confetti street for nearly 40 years and have never seen that type of damage.

Pena’s wife was overcome with emotion as her backyard quickly flooded. The couple worried the water would spill into their house.

The severe weather causing other damage in west El Paso.

The storm water knocked down a rock wall near the Mesa Place town homes and damaged cars in the parking lot. Some of the hail was as big as a quarter.

The wind caused a tree to topple right on top of a car and the rain flooded some streets.

Despite the damage to his home, Pena is thankful. The water stopped short of flooding his home– and both he and his wife are ok.

“Material things can be replaced, life can’t. So, I’m just thankful that nothing else happened.

The storm also causing some power outages. At one point more than a thousand people were without power.
