Clint High School students participate in 2-hour long active shooter exercise

Students at Clint High School participated in an active shooter exercise on Wednesday. The exercise was a joint effort between the Clint School District, El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Border Patrol, Office of Emergency Management, Clint Fire Department, Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo Tribal Fire Department, Department of Emergency Management, Life Ambulance and the Border Regional Advisory Council. The drill lasted about 2 hours. A helicopter was seen landing in front of the school. Law enforcement officers ran into the school, as emergency crews helped students, who pretended they were injured, outside. “They participated as if they were going toward the threat inside the campus,” CISD Risk Management Officer Miguel Escobedo said. “We had rescue teams for example ambulances, fire departments go in and triage and attend those individuals that were playing as the injured.” The exercise was planned two months ago, prior to the school shooting in Santa Fe, Texas. This was the first time the exercise was done at Clint High School. However, the district has participated in similar drills in the past. “The reason we decided to have this type of full scale exercise is because we see the need not only for our employees and students to know how to respond to this type of hazard but also for our first responder agencies to actually know what our procedures are and what to expect from our schools as well because that is definitely something that is very valuable,” Escobedo said.
