Son of imprisoned ex-cartel leader guilty in Texas gun case
The son of an imprisoned ex-Mexican cartel leader faces up to 13 years in prison for falsely claiming to be a U.S. marshal and flashing a gun at a Texas bar.
Federal prosecutors said Tuesday that 26-year-old Osiel Cardenas Jr. was convicted of impersonating an officer and being a felon with a firearm in a March incident in Brownsville. He still faces public intoxication charges.
Osiel Cardenas Guillen in 2010 was convicted in Texas on drug charges and sentenced to 25 years. His son in 2015 was convicted of attempting to smuggle ammunition into Mexico.
Prosecutors say Cardenas Jr. on March 14 showed bar patrons and responding police officers a gold badge and claimed to be a U.S. marshal.
Officials didn’t immediately provide details about authenticity of the badge Wednesday.
