Street, traffic improvements for east El Paso

As the city’s eastside is growing, officials said they need to keep up with projects to improve streets. Council recently approved traffic lights and landscaping for seven areas in east El Paso.

“In addition to beautifying the city, it’s also going to act as a public safety measure,” said District 6 city representative Claudia Ordaz Perez.

City officials looked at the most traveled roads of the eastside and decided to add traffic lights to seven intersections.

Ordaz Perez said constituents raised concerns about not having landscaping or enough lighting on some roads.

“When you look at other roadways on the westside of El Paso, you see median landscaping, but unfortunately on the eastside you don’t see that,” Ordaz Perez said.

The traffic lights and median landscaping are expected to be complete by next year.

Here are the other intersections that will get traffic lights:

– Alameda and Whittier

– North Loop and Lafayette

– Zaragoza and John Hayes

– Pellicano and Michaelangelo

– Pebble Hills and Sun Fire

– Rich Beem and Pebble Hills

– Tierra Cortez and Tierra Este

The cost to signalize each intersection is about $300,000.

Ordaz Perez said these improvements are in conjunction with the $21.6 million approved by city council for resurfacing east El Paso streets like Rojas and George Dieter.
