Sheriff’s Office Warns Residents of Animal Abuse Letter Scam

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a letter scam regarding animal abuse and neglect.

The letter states surveillance was conducted and provides the description of a dog that was not treated properly.

The sender provides animal care tips and asks the recipient to contact the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Unit.

The Sheriff’s Office says its Animal Welfare Unit will never mail a notice of this type. Contact will be made in person with the animal owner or an official notice will be left at the residence.

Any case of animal abuse or neglect will be investigated by a Sheriff’s Office detective. They ask if anyone has received this or any type of letter to please contact authorities.

The El Paso Police Department non-emergency number is (915) 832-4400 and the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number (915) 832-4408.
