LCPD officer fired for alleged extortion and voyeurism now accused of stalking ex-wife
A complaint affidavit obtained by ABC-7’s New Mexico Mobile Newsroom states the ex-wife of a former Las Cruces Police officer is accusing the former officer of stalking her after he allegedly started wearing their old wedding ring and visiting her workplace.
Police charged William D. Gonzalez with Aggravated Stalking and Violation of a Restraining Order. Gonzalez was fired from the police department in 2017 following allegations of extortion, harassment and voyeurism.
A court document states Gonzalez’s ex-wife told police she noticed someone had been using her Amazon account to search for rifles and scopes, then remembered she never changed the password on her account. She told police she suspected Gonzalez, who still had access to her account, had been the one searching for the guns. The woman also said her employer also told her Gonzalez had been visiting her workplace and asking about her. Investigators learned the woman’s parents, who assist with child custody exchanges, noticed Gonzalez had started wearing his old wedding ring and saying he missed his ex-wife.
Further, a court document states Gonzalez and his 3-year-old son approached a firefighter at a fire station and asked for a tour of the fire truck. Gonzalez allegedly told the firefighter his son was very interested in the fire trucks, but the firefighter noticed the boy was scared and did not want to go near the trucks. Gonzalez told the firefighter his ex-wife, the boy’s mother, had just been accepted into the academy and about how he wished she would have just remained with emergency medical services instead of trying to join the fire department.
Police said a second firefighter also reported Gonzalez showed up at the fire station to request a tour for his son. Gonzalez mentioned the boy’s mother was in the academy and that he was a former police officer. The firefighter told police Gonzalez had been spotted at several other fire stations around the city.
A third firefighter told police Gonzalez asked about the specific location of the firefighter’s academy and became upset when the location of the fire station hosting the academy that day was not provided to him.
In 2017, the LCPD fired Gonzalez after he allegedly threatened to publish nude photos of a woman. Las Cruces Police said Gonzalez attempted to extort a woman by offering to release explicit photos of her if she didn’t have sex with him. Investigators said Gonzalez, over a three-day period, sent more than 100 text messages to the woman and called her 30 times. Police said that when the woman would not respond and Gonzalez allegedly threatened to publicly reveal naked photos of her. Gonzalez allegedly suggested he would delete the explicit photos and stop interfering with the woman if she agreed to have sex with him. Authorities said Gonzalez obtained the photos without consent and without the woman’s knowledge. Gonzalez was charged with extortion, a felony, as well as harassment and voyeurism.
In 2016, Gonzalez was charged with indecent exposure after he allegedly answered his door naked after getting a pizza delivered to his home.
