Man caught with cocaine and firearms at Border Patrol checkpoint learns punishment

A Jury has sentenced a Colorado man caught with cocaine and two loaded firearms at a Border Patrol checkpoint to 30 months in prison.

Border Patrol agents arrested Leroy Cameron Ravenell, 28, of Colorado Springs, on November 11, 2016, during an inspection at a Border Patrol checkpoint near Alamogordo, New Mexico.

The Border Patrol agents found two loaded firearms and nearly a pound of cocaine in his vehicle. On May 17, 2017, Ravenell was indicted and charged with Possession of Cocaine with Intent to Distribute.

Court testimony during Ravenell’s trial revealed that on November 11, 2016, Ravenell was a passenger in his vehicle when it drove into the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on Highway 54, South of Alamogordo.

Border Patrol agents found approximately 243 grams of cocaine and two firearms in the back of the vehicle, along with a large amount of cash on Ravenell’s person during a routine inspection of the vehicle.

A jury also heard Ravenell’s statement to law enforcement acknowledging he brought the cocaine in El Paso, Texas, on the morning of November 11, 2016, with the intention of selling it to others.

A federal jury returned a guilty verdict against Ravenell on August 2, 2017.
