DPS launches iWatchTexas app

A new, free smartphone application aims to make Texas schools safer.

The iWatchTexas app was launched by Texas Department of Public Safety at the direction of Governor Greg Abbott in the weeks following the shooting at Santa Fe High School where 10 people were killed.

The goal of the app is to make it easier to report suspicious activity. That includes criminal, terroristic or school safety-related threats, said DPS in a news release.

“The new iWatchTexas mobile app is one of several solutions that Texas is implementing immediately to identify and report those who may pose a threat to our schools and to our communities,” said Abbott.

This is one step among dozens laid out by Abbott after a series of roundtable discussions after the Santa Fe shooting in May. Abbott announced 40 recommendations at the end of that month.

“The recommendations include actions that can be taken right now … as well as proposals for lawmakers to consider as we move forward,” Abbott had said during a news conference on May 30th.

The app is now available for iPhone users on the Apple App Store (iWatchTexas) and for Android users on Google Play (iWatchTexas).

It is not intended to report emergencies. All reports are confidential. Here are some examples of behaviors and activities to report:

– Comments made regarding killing or harming someone

– Strangers asking questions about building security features and procedures

– Briefcase, suitcase, backpack or package is left behind

– Cars or trucks are left in no-parking zones at important buildings

– Chemical smells or fumes that are unusual for the location

– People requesting sensitive information, such as blueprints, security plans or VIP travel schedules, without a need to know

– Purchasing supplies that could be used to make bombs or weapons, or purchasing uniforms without having the proper credentials

– Taking photographs or videos of security features, such as cameras or checkpoints

The public can report suspicious behaviors through the iWatch Texas program through the new mobile app, online at www.iwatchtx.org or by calling 1-844-643-2251.
