“This is miraculous:” El Paso toddler with terminal cancer defies the odds

At only two years old, Mia Ojeda has been battling stage four Neuroblastoma for half her young life.

“Mia’s proving doctors wrong,” said her mother, Suracy Gonzalez.

Two weeks ago, the toddler’s mother told ABC-7 she only had days to live. However, Gonzalez said her two-year-old continues to fight.

“My daughter is terminal, but yet, she’s a happy two-year-old,” Gonzalez said.

Mia was diagnosed with stage four Neuroblastoma in September, her mother said. Since then, the tumor has spread to her esophagus and liver. However, Gonzalez said her daughter’s zest for life has not changed.

“She has cancer, (but) she does not look sick,” Gonzalez said. She told ABC-7 her daughter continues to run and play like a happy two-year-old.

Despite her terminal diagnosis, the family will pursue treatment at a research hospital in Michigan later this month, which is not covered by their insurance.

Countless El Paso natives have raised thousands of dollars for Mia’s treatment fund, including the “Bearded Villains” club, which partnered with the Hermandad Motorcycle Club on Sunday. There was also a car wash last month. Gonzalez said the money helps tremendously.

“It’s going toward that,” Gonzalez said. “Everyone’s trying to help out my family.”
