Rematch on: Canelo and GGG to fight on September 15th

Unified middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez have worked out a “Hail Mary” deal for a rematch on September 15, 2018 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, ESPN reports.

On Tuesday, Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Alvarez, imposed 12 p.m. PT Wednesday deadline for Golovkin to accept an improved offer. Golovkin accepted a revenue split, Golden Boy confirmed.

Under the deal, Alvarez would get 57.5 percent of the revenue generated by the fight. Golovkin would get 42.5 percent, ESPN reports.

“I’m happy to inform that we have a fight September 15!!!!,” De La Hoya tweeted Wednesday.

Golovkin and Alvarez fought to a heavily disputed draw in September 2017. Most boxing experts believe Golovkin won the first fight. It generated 1.3 million pay-per-view buys and a $27 million gate, the third-biggest in boxing history, ESPN reports.

A May 5, 2018 rematch was canceled when Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) failed two drug tests for the performance-enhancing drug clenbuterol. The Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended Alvarez for six months and Golovkin successfully defended his title against Vanes Martirosyan.
