American Korean War POW speaks about the Trump-Kim summit

President Trump is home after his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.

Details of the agreements reached between the two leaders are still sparse, but some have their hopes and expectations of what the future holds.

Ret. Colonel Paul Roach is one of the surviving Army veterans who fought in the Korean Conflict. As American and North Korean leaders met face to face for the first time since the end of the way, Roach invited us to his home to speak of his experience being captured by Chinese and North Korean forces.

“They captured two of us. Half the platoon left the area we were in, but they were later killed, all of them,” Roach said.

Roach would be the only member of his platoon to make it home alive. He would spend 33 months as a prisoner of war. Decades on, he says the repatriation of American bodies is still an important goal, for him and for families.

“For example, my platoon I don’t know if they recovered any of the bodies from my platoon because we were sort of isolated,” he explained.

Roach hopes talks between the US and South Korea will lead to more bodies being repatriated, maybe even some of his old platoon members, but he’s worried that reports of combined military exercises stopping will lead to repeated history.

“The War is gonna start all over again like it did in 1950. We won’t have troops there, especially troops that have worked with the south Koreans and know how to operate with them,” Roach said.

For now, Retired Colonel Roach says he’ll keep his eye on the news waiting to see what happens between the US and North Korea.
