Texas school safety talks continue in Austin

Texas Lawmakers, students and educators continued their conference revolving around school safety. In the wake of the deadly school shooting on Santa Fe High School which left 10 dead and 10 more injured.

The May 18th shooting has prompted an alarm statewide. With Governor Gregg Abott hosting three round table talks addressing the issue of safety on campuses.

Much like those talks, lawmakers recommended a plethora of possible solutions to gun violence, among them arming teachers. However not all educators are on board.

“Teachers are teachers. They’re trained to teach skills. They’re trained to nurture children,” retired teacher Mitzi McEwen said.

Educators proposed bringing metal detectors to campuses as well as expanding the training for armed marshals.

“A school martial really is trained to do one thing, and that’s to stop an active threat. All the other duties that police officers have, we really don’t train them for that,” YLIE ISD Assistant Superintendent said.

A separate hearing addressing mental health is expected later this summer.
