Mayor Margo to welcome dozens of US mayors, visit Tornillo port of entry

El Paso Mayor Dee Margo tells ABC-7 he expects to receive as many as 50 mayors in El Paso Wednesday evening.

Margo recently participated in the 86th annual meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors. The mayor got to speak and network with hundreds of mayors from across the nation.

The mayor said he had to explain where El Paso was and who we are as a city. “The biggest thing I have been looking at is explaining to other mayors who El Paso is. We’re still an unknown jewel,” Margo said.

Margo told ABC-7 the mayors visiting El Paso Wednesday, Republicans and Democrats from all over the country, will take a formal stand on immigration reform to “send a message to Washington.”

Margo will give the mayors a tour of El Paso Wednesday. The next morning, the group will visit the Tornillo port of entry, the site of a shelter for undocumented male teenagers. Margo said he did not know whether they would be allowed inside the facility.

While attending the conference earlier this month, Margo was interviewed by National Public Radio. The mayor said that while he understands what the president wants to do address illegal immigration, the separation of children is not the way to do it.
