Mexico National Team merchandise sales scoring big in downtown during World Cup

Saying that Team Mexico World Cup fans are excited after Sunday’s 1-0 win against Germany is an understatement.

All over the busy the streets of Downtown El Paso fans are donning Mexico National Team soccer jerseys in support, eager for more winning goals to come.

“I’m proud I’ll wear my cap,” said super fútbol fan Miguel Angel Soto. “Tomorrow I’ll wear another one, and then after that another one, because I have about four or five different ones.”

Stores lining El Paso Street are stocked with gear. We met Soto in the area doing some shopping.

“As a matter fact, I came to get a new jersey,” he said. “I already have other jerseys, but I needed the white one.”

White, green, even black: The jerseys on sale in downtown come in all different colors.

Staff at Dyana’s Fashions, on El Paso Street and Fourth Avenue, said they sold out of jerseys 15 minutes after Team Mexico’s recent victory.

Soto said he was surprised to pay $9.99 for the exact one he was looking for.

“I was like ‘OK cool, I’ll take it,’ and they got my size: XXL,” he said “Hey, can’t beat that.”

At that price, the jerseys seem like a steal. Scrolling through Team Mexico merchandise on the Addidas website, official gear sells for 10 times that price at around $90.

For Soto, the authenticity of the jersey is less pressing than superstitions.

He said he’s reluctant to wear more than one piece of Team Mexico apparel.

“I don’t want to get overconfident –not that I don’t trust them.” Soto said. “I just don’t want to give out negative vibes.”

Mexico will head to the pitch Saturday at 9 a.m. to face off with South Korea.
