A look inside Segundo Barrio church sheltering migrants seeking asylum

A Customs and Border Protection runs out of space to detain Central American migrants seeking asylum in the US, more and more migrants are turning to churches and other organizations for help.

One of those groups is the St. Ignatius Catholic Church, located in the Segundo Barrio area. The church will be taking in a group of refugees, which could be anywhere from 60 to 100 people, including mother’s, fathers, and children.

“On Wednesday, we will be asking Immigration and Customs Enforcement to bring a lot of the families here to St. Ignatius. I still don’t have the number, but it could be as many as 60, 80 individuals that will be coming here,” said Ruben Garcia, with Annunciation House.

Volunteers and organizers tell ABC-7 the migrants will be fed inside the church’s cafeteria. Most will stay there for several days while they are waiting for the outcome of their asylum application status.

The migrants will sleep in quarters inside one of the lecture rooms at the church’s school, where Volunteers have set up several mattresses in several rooms.

There is also an intake office adjacent to the sleeping quarters, where the church determines the needs these families have. Then there’s a room where migrants of all ages will receive some of the clothing donated to the church.

Some of the asylum seekers have been traveling, many times walking for weeks and month, to get to the border.

The migrants will also be handed toiletries, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, diapers and band aides. Some will continue on to meet up with family they may have in the U.S.

Customs and Border Protection Officials tell ABC-7 they have all their information and will continue to track their whereabouts until their asylum status is determined.
