Isela Rubalcava Extension project complete, city to open road to drivers

A road that many West El Paso residents have been waiting to use is finally opening up.

The City of El Paso is holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday at 10 a.m. at 6675 S. Desert Blvd. near Canutillo High School to unveil the Isela Rubalcava Drive extension.

Part of the road was created in 2006 but a hold up over funding caused it to stop about a mile down.

Isela Rubalcava Dr. begins at South Desert Blvd. and will now link up to Highway Spur 16 and the I-10 Gateway.

The improvements are intended to help relieve traffic congestion the area gets because of its proximity to the Westside Sports Complex, Canutillo High School, and the El Paso Community College Northwest Campus.

The four-lane road has shared bike lanes, ADA compliant sidewalks, crosswalks and ramps, as well as lighting and landscaping.

The Isela Rubalcava extension project was funded project by the Texas Department of Transportation and is part of the city’s goal to improve El Paso’s regional comprehensive transportation system.
