25-vehicle pileup killed six people on I-10 near Lordsburg, New Mexico one year ago today

Today is the first anniversary of the deadly 25-vehicle pileup near Lordsburg, New Mexico.

Six people, including a man and his adult daughter from El Paso, were killed during the crashes.

The youngest victim was a baby from Phoenix.

Authorities said low visibility during a severe dust storm caused the pileup on I-10.

It prompted the New Mexico Department of Transportation to install a $5 million warning system that informs drivers of precautions to take during dust storms.

The system was installed late last year along that stretch of I-10 that sees dust storms regularly, which is near the New Mexico-Arizona state line.

If you are unable to exit the highway during a dust storm, authorities urge drivers to pull over to the side of the road and turn off all of the vehicle’s lights.
