Mosquito season is upon us. Here are some home remedies to keep them at bay

It’s summertime and we are about to enter the monsoon season.

This means mosquito season is upon us!

If you want to bite the pesky little insects in the butt before they can bite you, here are some home remedies from you can use to keep them at bay from Tractor Supply Co.

According to Tractor Supply Co., you can burn pinion wood in any outdoor fireplace to keep the mosquitoes away.

If you don’t have an outdoor fireplace, you can also use a fan to increase air circulation. A nice breeze can throw off a mosquitoes infrared senses and make it harder for them to fly.

A third option is to get a “Mosquito Plant,” a Lemon-scented Geranium. It is known to repel mosquitoes, exchanging them for a nice hint of lemon in the air.

If your mosquito problem is especially bad, you can grab a garden feeder and fill it with a simple mix of any kind of stale beer, Epsom salt, and mouthwash that contains alcohol. Spray down your yard, bushes, patios and anywhere else that might be breeding ground for mosquitoes. If you do this at the beginning and the middle of the mosquito season, your outdoor areas will be mosquito free.

If you are only going to be outside for a short time, you can put some lemon-scented dish detergent on paper plates and place them around the area you will be sitting. The lemon attracts the mosquitoes away from you and your guests.

If you want to get rid of the mosquitoes before they even hatch from their eggs, use coffee grounds. If you take used coffee grounds and put them in standing water where mosquitoes are most likely to breed, it forces the eggs to the surface and deprives them of oxygen. This remedy kills them before they can even become a problem and is completely safe for the environment.

If you’d like to do some landscaping as well as fight off mosquitoes, use red cedar mulch. Spread most of the mulch around your yard. Take the little bit you have left and boil it. Once it has boiled, take the water and spray it on walkways and anywhere else that is not covered by the mulch.

A final home remedy from Tractor Supply Co. is to take dry ice, put it in a bucket, and place it near your gathering area. Mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide and the thick clouds of it from melting dry ice will draw the mosquitoes away from you.
