Discovery show “Street Outlaws” pays a visit to El Paso

Some cast members from the Discovery show “Street Outlaws” are in the Borderland this weekend to do what they know best – street racing.

The show highlights street racers from across the country and is currently entering its 11th season.

Racers from the show including Derek Travis are getting ready for a “six-by-six shootout” race Saturday at the Southwest University Motorplex near Clint.

“Yeah, we got a little grudge match going on. The guys from Oklahoma are coming down. A guy from Georgia is coming down,” said local driver Michael Hunt. “A guy from Kentucky is coming down to see if they can play with us in El Paso doing a little street racing, but legally on the racetrack.”

Street racing is illegal on public streets, so those involved say its best you watch at the track and not try to do any on your own.

“It’s not as easy as we make it look. Trust me. There’s different levels,” said Travis.

Several racers gathered at the Southwest University Top Tech Garage Friday as fans got a chance to take a look at what’s under the hood of their cars.

It certainly revved up the engines of those wanting to see some street racing Saturday.

“We’re trying to, of course, bring back the street racing community here,” said Southwest University admissions officer Jay Khan. “So, we’re looking forward to having a big, big turnout and slay some rubber.”
