Friday the thirteenth: El Pasoans react

Friday was the second Friday the 13th of 2018, but are people superstitious about the day? Some actually think it’s a day for good luck.

“I’ve heard that it’s good luck actually, I don’t think it’s bad luck. It just depends how you view it,” says Ary, a student a UTEP.

“I don’t believe it’s bad luck because I’m a Christian and I believe that God’s got me,” says Joseph Hoffman, a student visiting from Albany, NY.

Some did believe there could be some bad luck on the day though.

“There’s a big possibility there might be some bad luck out there,” says UTEP Student Adan Lugo.

But how did Friday the 13th become associated with bad luck?

It is believed that the hysteria around Friday the 13th has biblical origins. The last supper had thirteen guests, Jesus and his twelve disciples. The next day, Jesus was hanged on the cross on a Friday according to the Bible. That’s how the bad luck on Friday the 13th superstition was born, according to those who study folklore.
