Report: Russian operatives target El Paso, pose as local news accounts
Thousands of Twitter accounts in Texas cities were reportedly created by information operatives in Russia and were posed to look like local news accounts, according to National Public Radio.
The report says some accounts targeted El Paso, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Odessa. A full list of 1,100 Twitter accounts were linked to the Internet Research Agency in St. Petersburg, Russia.
One account, @ElPasoTopNews, has since been deactivated.
The accounts reportedly did not spread false information, but rather appeared to build trust with Twitter users while beefing up their number of followers.
