Chaparral track star brings home gold

A Chaparral High School track stud just got back from Australia with some new hardware.

Abel Martinez, an incoming senior, landed in El Paso Monday.

He was in Australia competing in the Down Under Games.

Martinez runs the 100-meter and 200-meter sprint for the Lobos and decided to test his skills abroad.

He competed against over 50 runners from around the world in his 16-17 age division.

Martinez has only run track for 5 years but has already experienced great success.

This is what he said to our crew when he caught up to him at the airport.

“It was something different. It was a great experience to compete against other people from around the U.S., and especially from Australia. I qualified in the ones and twos so it was the prelims, semi-finals and finals.”

Martinez is eager to start his senior year at Chaparral High School.
