Original bail restored for man accused in Dallas fatal crash

A man accused in a fatal crash that killed a Dallas police officer had consumed nine alcoholic beverages in the hours before operating his vehicle, according to police records.

Adrian Breedlove, 25, faces charges of unlawful carrying of a weapon and intoxication manslaughter in the death of Dallas Police Senior Cpl. Earl “Jamie” Givens, 55. Police allege that Givens was blocking a Dallas interstate on his motorcycle as part of a funeral escort when he was fatally struck by Breedlove’s car Saturday.

Breedlove’s blood alcohol content registered 0.19 percent, which is more than twice the legal limit to drive, police said. Breedlove told officers he’d been celebrating his mother’s birthday Friday evening at a restaurant, where he drank several beers and two margaritas. He then continued drinking at his brother’s home before driving back to his house early Saturday morning, police said.

Officers found a semi-automatic handgun in the passenger’s seat of Breedlove’s vehicle, according to the affidavit.

Breedlove’s bail was set at $76,000 and he was released from jail Sunday, sparking outrage from the police association. He was arrested again Monday after prosecutors filed a motion requesting his bail be raised to $100,000. A Dallas County judge restored Breedlove’s original $76,000 bond Tuesday.

Breedlove’s attorneys declined to comment after the Tuesday hearing, but said they expect him to be released soon.

Breedlove is scheduled to make a court appearance Aug. 23, according to Dallas County jail records.
