SISD hosts technology conference for educators

More than 3,500 Socorro Independent school district educators participated in the district’s Digitally Nurturing Academics (DNA) conference Wednesday.

The conference is part of the school district’s “Operation Future Ready” campaign meant ” to invest in the latest technology tools to advance digital teaching and learning for all students and teachers,” according to SISD Superintendent Jose Espinoza.

The conference will help teachers, educators and other district staff to incorporate technology into the learning environment.

Espinoza opened the conference with a welcome back address to teachers and staff as they prepare to start the new school year.

Peer-led sessions and two keynote speakers will help teachers learn innovative ways to use technology in the classroom.

Some of the technology teachers were able to get hands-on experience with included virtual reality sets and smart boards.

“Socorro Independent School District really wants to integrate technology,” Lisa Lopez, a librarian with the school district said. “Our kids come to us knowing how to all kinds of things on technology and to keep them engaged, they want us to have the best and the brightest and the most recent tools. We come here to learn that.”

New laptops will also be given to seventh and eighth grade students year; part of the District’s DNA 1:1 program.

“In their off time or when their at home, they are already engaging with technology,” Vincent Thomas, assistant principal at Puentes Middle School, said. “If we can transmit that or bring that into the classroom that just helps them go to the higher level.”
