Looking past previous feud, Trump Administration stumps for Sen. Cruz
President Donald Trump’s eldest son, Donald Jr., campaigned in Texas on Wednesday with Ted Cruz, who is running to keep his seat as U.S. Senator.
Sen. Cruz, a former critic of Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election, is fighting in an unexpectedly close race for re-election this midterm cycle against opponent Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D- El Paso).
Trump Jr. was joined by Kimberly Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host, attorney and girlfriend of Trump Jr. The two attended a rallies in Wichita Falls and Conroe.
Touting a close bond with Sen. Cruz, Trump Jr. said he “put aside any of those differences” from the 2016 campaign and has worked closely with his father.
“He’s fought alongside of my father ever since, on every major vote. For every policy piece, for everything,” Trump Jr. said. “He put aside any of those differences and he did what’s right for you, because that’s his job and he’s doing it.”
Trump Jr. also looked past harsh words exchanged between both Sen. Cruz and President Trump in the past to look on toward the high-stakes midterms, where Republican control of both the U.S. House and Senate are at stake.
“You think you’ve seen dysfunction in D.C. recently?” Trump Jr. asked. “You ain’t seen nothing yet if you give Nancy Pelosi the House of Representatives, if you give Chuck Schumer the Senate. Let that be your motivation.”
And Sen. Cruz joined in poking at so-called “nastiness” from Democrats and praising the First Family.
“You endure a lot of grief, you endure a lot of attacks, you endure a lot of nastiness, and your father endures even more grief and attacks and nastiness, and let me thank you for your steadfastness and his steadfastness fighting for the country and ignoring the hatred on the other side,” Cruz said.
Sen. Cruz is garnering a lot of support from the Trump administration. The President himself has said he will visit Texas, book out the “biggest stadium” and campaign for Cruz. The administration has not provided a time when the President will make that visit.
Vice President Mike Pence is scheduled to be in Dallas Monday to campaign for Sen. Cruz.
All of this support comes after a war of words for months between then-candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz during the 2016 Republican presidential primary.
“As far as Ted Cruz, he’s one of the greatest liars and biggest liars I’ve ever known,” Trump said of the Texas Senator in a March 2016 interview with George Stephanopolous, “He lies about so much. He lies about things that he shouldn’t be lying about. He lies about things that don’t matter.”
In a rebuttal, Cruz once called Trump a pathological liar. “He doesn’t know the difference between truth and lies. He lies practically every word that comes out of his mouth.”
As the GOP majority slips in the U.S. Senate, and Cruz facing a tight race against Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke, the Trump administration is going all in for Cruz just months before the Nov. 6 election.
