State rests its case in trial of Alfonso Cedillo
The fourth day of the Alfonso Cedillo trial is underway and he is no longer facing indictment for three incidents of indecency with a child, only two.
The second of the two complaining witnesses also testified before the jury Thursday, describing the incident.
The alleged victim, who was 10 years old at the time of the alleged incident, says that Cedillo told him to follow him to the coaches’ office for a massage. Upon arriving to the room, he closed and locked the door and told the alleged victim to lie down on a table in the office. Cedillo began to massage his back, but eventually told him to turn over and began rubbing his inner thigh. The alleged victim then said Cedillo told him to pull down his pants, upon which Cedillo began rubbing his genitals.
However, attorneys for Cedillo called the witness’s testimony into question. Using a transcript of a forensic interview from March 1, 2012, they showed inconsistencies in the testimony. They also focused on how the players and second coach would notice the alleged victim and Cedillo missing from the basketball court.
However, they’re strongest argument came from an audio recording of an interview from 2012 with a woman investigating the claims of the alleged victims where it appears the alleged victim lied. The witness said the second coach, Coach Contreras, was present the day of the alleged incident through out his testimony today. However, in the interview played by the defense, he said the coach was not there that day. The interview was not played in whole, however.
The State rested its case around noon Thursday as the jury was let out for a lunch break.
