New El Paso mural to be unveiled at the 15th Annual Sunset Heights Tour of Homes
Pearl Properties is set unveil a mural that will pay homage to the history and architecture of Sunset Heights at the 15th Annual Sunset Heights Tour of Homes.
“Love Letter to Sunset Heights” will cover the entire side facade of the Pearl Apartments at 220 W. Yandell and will be visible when traveling on I-10 East at Santa Fe Street.
Iconic buildings and historical figures of Sunset Heights, which dates back to the 1800s and was one of the first planned neighborhoods in Texas, will be featured on the mural. These include famed Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa, architect Henry Trost, who designed many of the buildings in downtown El Paso, as well as the Wallace Apartments, Sunset Heights Grocery, and the Burges House.
Local artist Alejandro Lomeli, a longtime Pearl Properties resident who also worked on a previously commissioned bullfight mural, abstract art, and paintings for the company in the past, is the artistic director of the project. In addition, Mitsu Overstreet, who worked on the terrazo floors in the baggage claim hall of the El Paso Airport, serves the project’s artistic consultant, while Erik Angel provides additional artistic assistance.
Pearl Properties will be hosting a pop-up art gallery to celebrate the unveiling of the mural during the Tour of Homes, where artists creating “Love Letter” will be present to meet the public to discuss the project and display their artwork for sale. A percentage of sale proceeds will be donated to the Sunset Heights Neighborhood Improvement Association, which hosts the annual Tour to raise funds for home improvements for the neighborhood’s neediest residents.
“This mural is intended to be a gift to the people of El Paso and especially those who live and work in Sunset Heights; we hope everyone who sees ‘Love Letter’ from I-10 will be reminded that Sunset Heights is just an exit away, and that it is a culturally rich neighborhood worth exploring,” said Stefanie Uribarri, General Manager at Pearl Properties.
The 15th Annual Sunset Heights Tour of Homes will be held from noon to 4 P.M. on Saturday, October 13th. Tickets are priced at $10 for adults, $5 for children, and can be purchased at the Hal Marcus Gallery on 1308 N. Oregon prior to the Tour. During the day of the tour, tickets can be purchased at the Hal Marcus Gallary or the Burges House, located at 603 W, Yandell.
